MIGRAINES & HEADACHES
Acupuncture for Migraines in Colorado Springs
Migraines don’t just hurt. They take whole days from you. If you’ve spent too many mornings reaching for medication and retreating to a dark, quiet room, I want to help you find a way forward.

What would your life be like without migraines?
Maybe you'd stop planning around the next one. No more checking the weather, skipping the glass of wine or chocolate, or keeping medication in every bag just in case. You could say yes to the concert, the family dinner, or the early meeting without wondering if you'll have to leave halfway through. You'd wake up with a clear head and get through a whole week without losing a day to a dark room.
Tell me what migraines have been taking from you and what you'd love to get back. Let's start there.
Do any of these sound familiar?
Migraines that keep coming back every week or every month
Light, sound, or smells that make it worse
Nausea, or seeing an aura before it hits
Migraines that show up around your period
Tight neck and shoulders that seem to set it off
Stress, poor sleep, or skipped meals as triggers
Relying on pain medication more than you'd like
Missing work, plans, or time with family
Can Acupuncture Help Migraines?
Yes, for many people it can. The goal is fewer migraine days, less intense attacks, and less disruption to your life. This isn't just my experience. A 2016 Cochrane review of 22 studies involving nearly 5,000 people found that acupuncture reduced migraine frequency. It appeared similarly effective to the preventive medications studied, with fewer reported side effects. That’s why I think of acupuncture as part of a prevention plan, rather than only something to try when a migraine hits.
What Your Visit Looks Like
-
1
Time to Talk
We'll talk about your migraines: when they started, how often they come, what sets them off, and what you've tried. I'll also ask about sleep, digestion, stress, and your cycle, because they're often part of the picture.
-
2
Treatment & Rest
I'll explain what to expect, gently place the needles, and give you about 30 minutes to rest. If your neck and shoulders are tight, I may add some bodywork.
-
3
A Plan that Fits Your Life
We'll talk about simple steps between visits, whether herbs or nutrition guidance might help, and when to check in on your progress.
DR DAWNA ARA
Meet Your Acupuncturist
I want to understand what you’ve been dealing with. I'll listen to how often your migraines come, what seems to set them off, what you've tried, and how they're affecting your life.
A Doctor of Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine and Registered Nurse. I bring both backgrounds to your care, considering your overall health, not just your headaches.
Helping thousands of patients since 2009. Experience has taught me that no two people need exactly the same approach, especially with migraines.
I’ll pay attention to how you’re responding. We'll track how often your migraines come and how strong they are, and adjust your treatment as needed.

Everyone is different. Research suggests a course of treatment works better than one or two visits. Many patients start with weekly or twice-weekly visits for several weeks, then space them out as symptoms improve. We'll check in on your progress at each visit.

Most people are surprised by how little they feel. The needles are about as thin as a few strands of hair. You may notice a brief pinch, a dull ache, warmth or tingling, and then most patients relax deeply.

A new patient visit is $110, and follow-up visits are $80. Ask about packages if you're planning a series of treatments. I accept HSA and FSA cards.

Call 911 for a sudden, extremely severe headache or a headache with new weakness, trouble speaking, confusion, or loss of vision. A severe headache with fever and a stiff neck also needs emergency care. Don’t assume a new or very different headache is your usual migraine.
